Shipmate / Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what crews and offices ask before they start. If yours is not here, ask us.
What happens when the vessel loses coverage?
Everything is stored on the phone. Messages you have received can still be read without a connection, and anything you write while coverage is gone is sent on its own once it returns. You do not have to do anything, and you do not have to remember to try again.
Does the crew have to install something new?
The crew downloads Shipmate from the App Store or Google Play, the same way as any other app. There is a browser version too, which most crewing managers prefer when they are at a desk with a keyboard and a full screen.
What about people without a smartphone?
They get an SMS and log in on the website to read the message. Nobody is left out, and you see their read status just like everyone else's.
How long does it take to get started?
With an integration to your HR or safety management system, or a CSV export of the crew list, the setup takes an afternoon. Then the crew are invited in.
What about languages on board?
Shipmate itself is in English. Which language people write to each other in is up to them, and it is usually the language the crew already speaks together.
Still have a question?
